A Trip to Mekedatu Falls, (the goats leap).

Visit the Mekedatu Falls

Mekedatu Falls is located in Kanakapura Taluk.  The distance is 100 kilometers from Bangalore.  It is exactly 26 km from Kanakapura.  You need to drive through the villages to reach this place.  There are a lot of signboards throughout the way showing the directions to Sangama and Mekedatu.

It feels so refreshing to have a vacation which has a total disconnect from the daily hectic schedule and spending time with family and friends which we relish upon.  Traveling does serve as an energizer to cope with the stress from the city life with all the hustling and bustling of running around in the hustle and bustle of life.

After the scorching heat waves, we welcome early monsoon which brings a great joy to us.  With each season passing by, the destinations for a holiday break keeps changing in the quest of exploring new places.  Monsoon is the best time to visit the waterfalls and the easy getaways places from Bangalore to enjoy the bliss of nature.

Estimated Time to Reach:  3-1/2 to 4 hours.

Visiting hours:  8:30 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m.

The best time to go on a Mekedatu trip is during monsoons from October through February.

This waterfall is situated after Sangama, means in Kannada, a combination of rivers.  The convergence of Arkavati with Kaveri rivers to form Sangama.

Mekedatu is a Kannada word which means “goats leap.”  From this point, about 3.5 km downstream, Kaveri river runs through the deep valley.  The name is originated from the story which is believed to be from ancient times, a goat was chased by the tiger, in an attempt to save its life, it leaped afar the valley and succeeded to cross the river.  There are traces of goats’ paw marks of larger size which can be seen on the rocks.

We will first reach Sangama, where there is ample space to park our vehicles.  In Sangama, we can play in water after crossing the river, apart from that there is nothing much one can see or do over here.  You need to walk towards the river but are not allowed the walk down the river.  Instead, there are (Theppa), these are small boats to take you to the other side of the river.

Once alighting from the boat, you need to commute in the bus for the bumpy ride to reach the waterfalls.  Carefully descend the steps to explore the place of Mekedatu Falls.  Watch out for slippery rocks.
